An Overton resident was arrested on multiple charges after he assaulted an Overton Police Officer last week. Jonathan Earl Stuckey, 27, of Overton was charged with assault public servant, resisting arrest, assault family violence, and public intoxication.
Captain Clayton Taylor responded to a disturbance call at 6:18 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, in the 500 block of Lamar Street and found the subject lying on the ground. Overton Police Chief Clyde Carter said, “He appeared to be intoxicated. His mother was trying to get him up and into the residence and he assaulted his mother. Then he came after Captain Taylor. He was subdued by Taylor and during the altercation Taylor broke his right hand, close to the pinkie.”
The officer attempted to use his pepper spray and had to use his baton, said the chief. “You go from pepper spray to the baton and then to your firearm. He had to go to the baton because Mr. Stuckey knocked the pepper spray out of his hand,” he said.
Arp Police helped transport Stuckey to the Smith County Jail. Taylor drove himself to East Texas Medical Center in Henderson, where he was treated and released that same night. The officer, who is left-handed, is back on the job. “The doctor told him it will take approximately three to six weeks to heal. They said all they could do was put an Ace bandage on it,” Chief Carter said. Taylor has been with the department five years.
The police chief said he did not know if Stuckey remained jailed. He also had a warrant out for motion to revoke probation. On 8-15-08, he was charged with resisting arrest and fail to identify to the Overton Police.
